Education and knowledge dissemination

Beitostølen Health Sports Center's ongoing mission is to disseminate knowledge through courses, seminars and educational programs within the core area of "physical activity and disability" - with both a health and educational approach.

A central part of the center's activities is to develop and process experience- and R&D-based knowledge for teaching purposes. This is an important step in the center's development as a national and international leading provider of expertise in our field.

Employees frequently participate in conferences for relevant professional communities at home and abroad, often with their own contributions. Some are members of external professional groups and relevant organizations. The institution is also involved in international exchange and development programs.

Since 1970, over 10,000 students have had internships at Beitostølen Health Sports Center. Around 200 students from colleges and universities are accepted for internships each year. Most are students in sports science, but also many in physiotherapy, occupational therapy or other health sciences. We have a physiotherapist on duty at all times.
With an interdisciplinary approach and great emphasis on user contact in practical situations, knowledge and attitudes in the field are acquired through an opportunity-oriented approach.

Beitostølen Health Sports Center offers the entire education course for the medical specialty of physical medicine and rehabilitation (FMR) and 6 months of service with relevant learning activities for the medical specialty of General Medicine (AM). Clinical service or internship at the center is also a relevant supplementary service and/or continuing education for other medical specialties such as neurology and pediatrics.
Beitostølen Health Sports Center has an agreement for a four-week internship for final-year medical students at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Oslo.

The Physical Activity and Disability (FAF) program at NIH is a one-year postgraduate program that teaches students how to facilitate physical activity, sports, physical education, and outdoor activities for people with various disabilities. The program provides 60 credits.

During the fall semester, students spend 7 weeks at Beitostølen Health Sports Center; 3 weeks of teaching in early fall, and 4 weeks of internship later in the fall.

Almost 900 students have completed this program (which has changed names over the years) since 1973.

Throughout its existence, Beitostølen Health Sports Center has organized seminars and conferences that are wholly or partly related to our professional activities - with extensive national and international participation. The seminars may be arranged for special professional groups, such as health personnel or sports education personnel, but are most often interdisciplinary.

Local professionals associated with children/youth staying at the center are offered a three-day professional visit. The content of the professional days includes observation and participation in activities together with the child/youth, teaching/information on current topics (e.g. therapeutic riding, facilitation of physical activity, activity aids), and participation in individual follow-up conversations with the child/youth, parents and professional personnel at the center. The purpose of the professional days is to extend the desired positive effect of the rehabilitation/habilitation stay and to strengthen lines of cooperation locally.
